Do you know the origin of the term “cop” for a police officer? Despite what many think, it has nothing to do with copper buttons or badges or anything like that. “Cop” is actually a word that’s been around for centuries and means “to take or seize”, and in this case alludes to arresting someone. Eventually, the slang term “copper” was used for the police, since they’re the one doing the arresting, and eventually it was shortened down so that the verb “cop” also became a noun.
This also explains the phrase “cop a feel”, but please don’t do that without permission. Otherwise, you’re likely to get copped by a cop for copping.
